Lyrics for the After Dark album

1. Ali’s Blues (Instrumental)

This album was created as Brian's father was gradually deteriorating - first in hospital and then at home. He was a big jazz fan - and the tune seemed to lend itself to a blues feel. The title made sense! he heard it once when alive - and seemed pleased. It was played at his funeral.

2. The Garden

Me on a bit of a rant about the human race and what it’s doing to our planet!.

How many people is it going to take? How many voices together?
What do we do when it all starts to break down?
Nothing left then but the weather

Are we too late? Are we too few?
In the face of the majority is there nothing we can do?
Is this the end? Is it all lost?
We’re the dinosaurs, the “we want more”s no matter what the cost

We are a plague on the planet – We are a plague on the earth

How do we get back to Adam & Eve? Find our way back to the Garden?
Who do we turn to – what can we believe?
No one will grant us a pardon

We know how to take – much less to give
We’re abusing and just using up this precious place we live
Oh we can care – yeah, we can love
But this sickness we’re afflicted with means we never get enough

Oh there is no forgiveness – who do you think you’re praying to?
We’re sitting here in our own mess – It’s all down to me and you …

3. Between Worlds

As Brian’s Dad deteriorated, he seemed to enter a kind of dream world as he receded from ours. The words were used at his funeral.

He greets you with a smile
but doesn’t quite know who you really are
Oh, he says, It’s been a while
and how on earth did we all ever get this far?

Get the coffee on and go pull up a chair
Take off your jacket son and don’t just stand there like all these folk seem to do

His hands trace out the diagram
swirling colours in the canvas of his life
Get the glasses out and pour a dram
Here’s a toast to you, my family, my wife

All these college pals and mates I know from school
laughing at the times when we all played the fool
I see them waiting in the wings

Words are spoken, tears are shed as we gather round his bed
I’m playing home movies in my head, hear his laughter, things he said
His hands are reaching for the door. He checks his watch it’s time to go
His eyes don’t focus any more – they see worlds that we don’t see
And all of those who’ve gone before gather round to set him free

Ah… Between worlds

4. Stardust

I wrote this after a beautiful walk up the hill with the dogs on the most peaceful day ever… The Icelandic volcano had grounded every plane and only the birds had the sky.

Up the hill in the morning sun
we walk and talk – watch the dogs run
Above us skylarks singing – play in
a sky as clear as the first day

Way in the distance the earth explodes and
gas, molten rock and shattered glass
rises in columns, filling the air
shimmering through the atmosphere

And all of us down here, wings clipped, earthbound
No jets, no planes, no sound
The planet brings us back to ground
We stop and wonder …

One mountain cracks its fiery crust, reminding us we’re simply dust
speeding across the galaxy, but in the stillness of this day
I stop and wonder …

How do I love you – How do I love you this way?

5. Hands

Hands are fascinating! They can be incredibly beautiful - They can do great good or terrible things and they feature lots in religious imagery. We have some icons we brought back from Greece and I love the way the hands are depicted on those. I love the images in churches and am fascinated by how much power we invest in them, when perhaps all we need is the simple touch of a real human hand…

The saints hold out their hand – long fingers and open palms
The beauty of their hands, traced out in burnished shades of red and gold
They calmly gaze at us and say Behold, you ask us to be keepers of your souls
And I want to be held – To feel your arms around me evermore
Have the protection of this sacred place
And I want to be held – To feel your hands upon me evermore

Our hands create this art and make of it a sacred heart
Then the delusion starts and we give up responsibility
Project our hopes and fears upon our deity
Seek forgiveness in our holy dreams
And we want to be held – Lie in your blessed arms forevermore

You bring hope to our hearts as we go on our starry way
Give comfort in the dark – the promise of another day
You brush away our tears when there is nothing more to say
You melt away my fears and hold me like a prayer
And we want to be held – To feel your arms around us evermore
Receive your blessings in this sacred place
Believe the magic in your golden face
And I want to be held – To feel your hands upon me evermore

The saints hold our their hands – long fingers and open palms
The beauty of their hands …

6. Love Me Now

Let’s live in the now and appreciate it fully. I guess I allowed myself to get a bit assertive about it!

I love you now
in this moment
It’s all I have to give

Because right now
in this moment
is all that we can live

What might have been
or will be
will all be lost in space and time

So love me now
in this moment
where I am yours and you are mine

Where I am yours and you are mine

So love me now
Love me baby, love me right now

7. After Dark

Everyone loves a good vampire story and I had a phase of reading all the Sookie Stackhouse novels (NO “Twilight” nonsense!) It made me wonder what it would be like to be a human in love with a vampire …

I wait for the fading of the light and for you to wrap me up
in your velvet cloak of night
Have I been hypnotised by your nocturnal song?
I can’t believe that what you’re doing to me is wrong
You make me feel that this is where we both belong
- After dark

No one else seduced me as utterly as you
and I don’t care what they say, I know our love is true
Have I been hypnotised by your nocturnal song?
I can’t believe that what you’re doing to me is wrong
You make me feel that this is where we both belong
- After dark

Shooting stars burn up in space, fireflies light up your face
I see lovers in your eyes – All of those who’ve lived and died
Underneath it all we’re just the same – Entranced like moths circling the flame

And so it goes …

The days, they seem so empty, so long.
I’m indifferent to the warmth of the sun
but then the evening star finally appears
and with the darkness come my passions and my fears
These precious moments I have with you my dear
- After dark

But there are monsters out there, waiting in the night
You know who they are, you can feel them prowl
I don’t know how to stop them – can’t begin to fight
They’re reaching for my soul – tearing at my soul
I have no power against them… only your love, only our love…

I wait for the fading of the light and for you to wrap me up
in your velvet cloak of night
Have I been hypnotised by your nocturnal song?
I can’t believe that what you’re doing to me is wrong
You make me feel that this is where we both belong
- After dark

8. Blue Buddha

A while back, after having a ruptured appendix removed – I did a collage/painting self portrait as the Blue Buddha. I wondered if this was a bit sacrilegious, but a Buddhist friend told me there is a tradition of seeing yourself as the Blue Buddha in order to heal. Seems I unconsciously tapped into this! The lyric is just another way of expressing this desire for healing on so many levels other than just the physical. I really enjoyed going for it at the end with the vocals!

Blue Buddha – gimme some of your medicine.
Blue Buddha – you got the cure for everything.
Blue Buddha – how’d I get to be such a mess?
Blue Buddha – all I want is a taste of bliss.

What should I do? Should I wait?
Do I just sit still and contemplate?
Show me the light. Give me a clue.
I just want to be serene like you.

Blue Buddha – you got the power to heal.
Blue Buddha – tune into how I feel.
Blue Buddha – how’d I get to be such a mess/
Blue Buddha – take me into the emptiness.

None of it’s real. All that I feel.
We’re all dreaming some kind of ideal.
Whatever’s here. Whatever’s true.
We’re all reflections in the face of You.

Oh gimme some of your
I really need, I really need some of your
Oh gimme some of your

Bliss…
